This film felt like a labor of love. It felt old-fashioned and uber silly. It was a delight to see.
Jason Segel seemed like the perfect person to be the leading man and to be part of the team that wrote this movie. He never seems to take himself very seriously. He has in the past written and sung some truly ridiculous songs. He is naturally larger than life. Upon reflection, he does seem like a Muppet of a man.
I also thought Amy Adams was a great choice as the leading lady. She has a talent for singing and dancing. She has the capability to match Segel's outsized humor. She is willing to fully commit to the ride that is Muppets.
I was also surprised to see one of my favorite actors, Chris Cooper, cast as the villain. As with all the celebrities involved in this project, he seemed genuinely thrilled to be working with the Muppets and chewed the scenery with glee. I never imagined that I' would ever see this actor singing a rap song, and I'm glad it all happened.
The script was smart and funny and heartfelt. This was the movie that I really wanted to see this holiday season, and i wasn't completely sure why. I had always loved the Muppets, but I hadn't seen all of their work. It wasn't like I was an uber fan. But It was wonderful to see the Muppets in a project again after such a long time. It felt to me like a small window of hope. In a way it doesn't surprise me that for the past twelve years, we haven't had the Muppets to entertain us. There have been some dark times. The fact that they are back, with their optimism and wit and subversion, makes me happy.
