Right now, in these troubling times, there is a big place in my heart for movies where I can sit in the dark and laugh until I cry.
I loved this movie, because although it was very silly, it had a lot to say. It was a story where even the rival has an opportunity to be poignant, where the true love interest is genuinely sweet, where the actors seemed to be egoless, where they were willing to do anything for the sake of these characters, where faces were mobile and eyes were full of life. It was a movie that sparked memories for me. It filled me with wistfulness and tenderness. It opened my heart. It gave me an opportunity to see another performance by the late, great Jill Clayburgh. It featured an awesome cupcake. It was a comedy of many layers. It had moments that I wanted to sew up in a sachet. If I had to pick a favoite moment it would be: sit-ups behind the tree. It's one of those movies where you want to speak in code, because nothing should be spoiled, until you've seen the movie yourself and then you have your own Bridesmaid decoder ring. I came late to the party, but now I could watch this movie on a loop at least three times. I would like to see it on a double bill with "I Love You, Man." It's a movie about how much you can love your friends. It's about how genuinely ridiculous and how important rituals are. It's about moments you have wtih the people who you can really let in.
She did. She laughed 'til tears flowed. I fear there may be more viewings of this movie in my future.
